April 4-5, 2008.  San Diego Country RID presents ETHICAL ETIOLOGY. WHAT'S THE CONFLICT? WHAT WOULD WE DO? AND WHY? from 6pm to 9pm on Friday and Saturday 9am to 5pm at Deaf Community Services, 3930 4th Ave., Suite 300, San Diego, CA  92103.  This 10 hour track with Allisun Kale will discuss the evolution of the Code of Ethics and the larger meta-ethical principles that the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct (CPC) is based on. We will examine ethical etiologies, discuss potential/real conflicts and discuss what courses of action exist. We will also discuss another framework of Demand Control Schema (DC-S) as a tool to guide critical thinking about ethical scenarios.  Participants will examine ethical decision making and critical thinking from several perspectives; as mentors, as seasoned interpreters, as practitioners preparing for the NIC Interview portion, and as those simply refreshing themselves with the CPC. Central themes woven into this seminar are; working with mentees, teams and others; approaching our work from a strong ethical base; learning how the CPC's Tenets and Guiding Principles and Illustrative Behaviors can help guide our critical thinking.  Allisun Kale holds RID CI, CT, NIC, EIPA and a Masters in Deaf Education. Allisun has fifteen years of professional service and a social commitment to the Deaf Community. She has extensive experience and education in interpreter training, interpreting, Sign Language teaching, Deafness and Deaf Studies, service provision for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and deaf education. She is currently full-time faculty within the Interpreter Education Program housed in the Deaf Studies Department at CSUN. The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).  This organization is an excellent resource for interpreters who wish to stay current on trends in interpreting.  RID Certification is generally accepted in all 50 states.  RID testing dates and times are determined by the national office except for SUPER SITES.  Super sites can be found by contacting the national office.

Be aware of the type of certification you need for the area in which you live.  Some states require certain types of certifications.  Some states have local certifications that are acceptable in that state only.  When preparing to work as an interpreter, contact your local deaf community agency or your local interpreter referral services.  They should have current information about your state's requirements.
