Are we a culture? What about Cable Television Captioning? Who was Frederick C. Schreiber? Who are “the Big 4” (Massieu, Clerc, Berthier and Brown) and what did they do?? How does their work affect us today? What are the issues in our community that hold us back?  ASL is a language – how do we prove that? Who was William C. Stokoe and where does he fit in? What makes a good ally? What are the challenges that Deaf people face with hearing allies? How do we best understand and support each other?  Interpreters are not invisible. What we do makes a difference! How do our decisions and behavior affect people? Jax will lead discussion and share from his unique Deaf perspective and experience. We will walk through various scenarios together, examining our choices. We will do mental exercises to improve our skills.  How do we join hands and make a difference in our community?  Where: C.S.U.N. April 22, 2009.  El Camino Community College - Community Education welcomes you to SILENT YOGA (CLASSICAL HATHA YOGA FOR THE DEAF COMMUNITY) from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at El Camino College, 16700 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance, CA  90506.  For the first time ever, yoga is reaching out to the deaf community. Silent Yoga focuses on mind, body and spirit through movement, breathing and relaxation; therefore, creating tremendous physical fitness and energy to the fullest extent. Attendance to the first meeting is mandatory for beginning students. Please bring a mat. Hearing students welcome, however, the class will be taught using ASL. Beginning to advanced level classical Hatha Yoga. Instructor Nikki Benjamin has been practicing classical Hatha Yoga for 25 years and has been teaching for four years. April 25, 2009.  College of the Desert is pleased to offer an ASL-interpreted performance of the College of the Desert production of Fernando Garcia Lorca's play, "BLOOD WEDDING." This is a dramatic play about a mother who has lost her husband and oldest son to knife killings. Now her only remaining son is planning to marry a young woman and the play presents the drama leading up to the wedding and the tragedy that follows. This is the west coast premier of the most recent translation and of Lorca's play. Ticket prices are $10 for students, $12 for everyone else. April 26, 2009.  Come along and join us for our fun bowling and social event that takes place on the FOURTH Sunday of each month at the Fantasy Lanes in Indio. This is great for adults and families because children are welcome. If you want to bowl, please arrive by 11:45 am so you can select the bowling ball that fits and get your bowling shoes in time to start bowling at 12 Noon. The bowling alley gives us the very special rate of $2 per person for each game bowled, and shoe rental is free. If you want to socialize but not bowl, you will be welcome. The bowling alley is adjacent to the Fantasy Springs Casino which is just north east of the Golf Center Pkwy exit from the I-10 Freeway in Indio. April 30, May 1-2, 2009.  Vista High School American Sign Language Department welcomes you to "Fearless" An American Sign Language Concert from 7 pm to 9 pm at Avo Playhouse Theater, 303 Main Street, Vista, CA.  Upper level ASL students will interpret quotes and songs to bring awareness of ASL to the hearing community and to honor the Deaf community. This is an annual show at the community theater in Vista, California. Voice interpreting makes it easy for the hearing to enjoy. Lisa Jones, teacher and director, is a 1997 masters graduate from the National Leadership Training Program in Northridge, has taught Deaf children for 20 years, and developed the VHS ASL program 10 years ago. "Fearless" is an American Sign Language Visual Concert for the Deaf and Hearing Community. "Fearless" is designed promote, celebrate and bring awareness of ASL. All ages, Deaf or Hearing will enjoy the show. Voice interpreting assists the hearing. The concert is an annual event. Directed by a 30 year teacher in the Deaf community, Lisa Bare Jones of 1987 NLTP, this is a celebration of American Sign Language.  Directions: Take Highway 5 or 15 to 78 freeway toward Vista. Take Vista Village Drive exit off Highway 78. Turn north on to Vista Village Drive, and right on to S Santa Fe. Make a quick left turn on to Main Street.
